The year 2019 is the centennial year of the founding of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). To celebrate this important date, the IUGG Bureau called for proposals to be dedicated to the IUGG Centennial. All proposals should address international cooperation in Earth and space sciences and highlight the importance of science for sustainable development of society. Key scientific priority areas for the call were (i) creation of new knowledge in Earth and space sciences; (ii) dissemination of knowledge, data and information on geoscience topics; (iii) geoscience for sustainable development; (iv) geoscience and policy interface; and (v) geoscience education and outreach in developing countries. In the frame of this grants program, the IUGG decided to award the project Implementation of the United Nations’ Resolution on the Global Geodetic Reference Frame (UN-GGRF) for Sustainable Development in Latin America submitted by the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) with the support of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI) and the IUGG National Committees of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Costa Rica. The workshop is also sponsored by the International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG) of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). Main objective of this project is a capacity building activity oriented to the implementation of the GGRF in Latin America, following the scientific definition released by IAG and the political frame outlined by the Subcommittee on Geodesy (SCoG) of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM). The main idea is to provide the Latin American colleagues responsible for the national geodetic reference frames with scientific and political tools to convince policy makers about the necessity of investing in geodetic and geophysical infrastructure in their countries. The capacity building activity is called International workshop for the implementation of the Global Geodetic Reference Frame (GGRF) in Latin America and it will be held at the Instituto Geográfico Nacional of Argentina in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from Sep 16 to 20, 2019.
